Motorised Etcher-Sketch Approved Make a 2-d plotter that controls an etcher-sketch from the net so people can write little messages on it.

Edit: Not only that, but can also be used to draw a bitmap image.

Materials required: An etch-a-scetch, two motors, either steppers with adaquate torque, or servos, controlling hardware. Software wise will need a lampmaster interface for the motors plus an application interface for anything more complex, such as a bitmap conversion. Also need a way to shake it. A few solinoids could do the trick.

Pet Treats Pending for more research I think it would be awesome if there was some way to interact with an animal in your house, perhaps if you had a fish tank with a camera on it we could turn on and off a lightup ornament, or even give the fish a bit of food electronically (Timer and Amount controlled obviously :) ). Or, if you have a cat a way of giving it a treat (Maxiumum say 10 treats a day, an hour gap between them) with a camera on the aparatus that gives out the treat. :)

Windows webcam application Approved Take the webcam2000 source code and add in the dathtml functions as well as the x10 interface to the site for the firecracker and mabye the cm11a. This will both make it easier for windows users to get cams online, but will also give them the capability of setting up their own x10 devices on the site.

Edit: Some progress has been made on this. I'll be able to create a console application within the next day or two that will interface with the lampmaster program on the server and receive webpage based cam requests. It will also have a very simple configuration. I plan to post this and create my own API for it, along with a class library, and provide the source to anyone who wants to expand it to create a more conventional client should they get to it before I do. But at least I'll have the minimum necessary operational.

Cam stuff I will hold off on for a while, probably separate that into a separate project even if they get merged eventually.

Currently I have it set up to force a space every 30 characters to prevent people from leaving extremely long words that cause the page to widen unnecessarily. Jeeves captures. Approved Let Jeeves capture a cam image every so often (once or twice a day at most) when someone is both watching a certain cam and talking about the subject of that cam in the chatroom. Jeeves can then grab a random quote from the chatroom and use it as the caption.

And make him savvy, such as repeat offenders. That and it'd be funny as hell to watch :)

Edit by Restil: Problem with that is, if I have a problem with someone such that I don't want them around now, I probably don't want them around ever. If all we want to do is keep them out of the channel for a bit, we have moderation and channel kick/bans to use. I tend to prefer not to use that, as it just aggravates people. Aggravating someone truely annoying is not going to make things better, and aggravating someone who just made a stupid mistake is going to make us look bad.

Online Robosapien Pending for more research Modify a Robosapien toy to allow it to be internet controllable, with a wireless cam. Similar to the rc car mods, but the robosapien has a lot more buttons to work with, so something slightly more complicated than the simple parallel port interface will be required.

After actually using a robosapien, some problems have been encountered. The controller uses IR instead of RF, making controlling it in anything other than an extremely restricted environment impossible. Also, the balanced nature of the robot means adding a cam or any hardware of any signficant weight will make controlling it more difficult.

By this I mean a chessboard whose pieces have magnetic bottoms, and a robotic arm of some sort with a magnet underneath the chessboard, which could move the pieces around, thus playing chess. With a webcam, of course. Or perhaps some other, simpler game. Tic-tac-toe?

EDIT: Magnetic board games already exist. Find me some links to some of the products and also some open source code for a chess game that would be easy to hack for this purpose.

Interactive Cat Toy Submitted Very simple. A small motor with a cat toy on an elastic string suspended from the ceiling. All the motor has to do it jiggle the toy, or raise it up and down just a few inches, which should be enough to entice the cat to play with it. You could have a webcam watching it, and if someone was lucky enough, they could play with your cat over the web! You could also get some pretty great caps.

ping pong ball gun Submitted Doesn't necessarily have to be ping pong balls, but something that shoots something that's small, light, cheap, and not even remotely dangerous. The ammunition will be stored in a hopper that contains at a minimum of 100 shots. They will then feed from there into the gun and people will be able to take shots one at a time.

Picture Limits Submitted Have a limit on the data size of a profile picture - there are many people with pictures > 500kb and I have even seen some > 1mb .. it's really a drag on people with slower connections. Maybe like 100kb max? Anyone can easily use a photo editing program so compress it down if needed.

submitted picture limits Submitted I am going to come back to this issue, since it might have been overlooked :) The concern was that people submit pictures for their profile that are huge in size - which are hell on low bandwidth and dialup users. Just this week someone has uploaded a 3MB image...

It could be controlled with a limit on the size of the image allowed, and/or a thumbnailing script that uses image manipulation to compress it. Another suggestion might be to deny BMP images, as they are naturally larger in size.

Master Phone Interface Approved Build a single phone interface box, with connections for a phone line, power supply, parallel port, and two 1/8" stereo plugs for input and output audio. This box will provide the hardware necessary to do the following:

A very simple, down to earth, and potentially sarcastic explanation of what a webcam is, where you get them, how you hook them up to the computer, and what software you use to make them interface with the internet. Lots of pictures. Lots of condescending baby talk. This will be the page I send people to when they can't believe the cam is live.

Probably want a section on that page about how easy it is to hook up lights. I will still have the regular howto on that subject for those who actually believe it's real, but clearly some people are just NOT with the current technology and need this handholding guide.

Alarm Clock Submitted A completely pointless and quite expensive, network capable alarm clock. It will operate like any typical alarm clock, but house an embedded computer and contain an ethernet jack (or use wireless). The AM/FM radio will work normally, and the option to play mp3/ogg files over the network or flash card will also be available. LCD screen will display the time and other info as requested. The buttons on the clock can be used to communicate back over the network, to perform scripted functions.

This will be a nifty toy. And nobody will probably ever want one, as it will likely cost over $200. Still, it has a novelty application. I've had moments, sitting downstairs in the office, and the alarm going off upstairs, when I wish I could get on a webpage down here and turn off the alarm.
